The Wave

I didn’t know how to be loved by you

And you didn’t know how to love me

We both didn’t know what it meant

To be so drowned by a wave

We saw it coming but didn’t anticipate

It would kick our feet under us

Face first not able to brace

And gasping for air.

The air that your breath filled

To my lungs

Pulled away by the wave that grew

Stronger and stronger with every pull

until I can no longer reach

out to you.

Can’t remember the last time

Our feet were planted on dry ground.

Not a Tsunami, because we could have ran.

Not a storm, where we saw the darkness come.

This was an earthquake

Breaking apart the earth and destroying

Everything in its path.

Causing the ripples that we saw as

Waves that we could conquer

Not knowing the ground below

Was creating the monster

That would swallow us whole.
